Until the sixteenth century Wrocław had not been granted an imperial privilege authorizing the city to use a coat of arms. On 12 February 1530 the chancellery of King Ferdinand I of Bohemia and Hungary in Prague issued letters patent granting a new coat of arms to the city, and on 10 July 1530 the emperor Charles V confirmed the grant.
In 1990 the City Council chose for Wrocław's arms the quartered shield with a plate in the centre which had been used from 1530 to 1938 and from 1945 to 1948.

Wrocław's coat of arms is a shield quarterly Gules and Or:

1. In dexter chief a lion rampant queue fourché erect facing sinister Argent armed and langued Or outlined Sable crowned Or outlined Sable;
2. In sinister chief an eagle displayed inverted Sable across its breast and wings a crescent Argent with a crosslet of the same rising from its middle;
3. In dexter base a capital letter W serifed Sable;
4. In sinister base St. John the Evangelist's head affronty with a youth's face and lady-like hair Argent outlined Sable nimbed Or outlined Sable issuant from an inverted crown Or outlined Sable;
5. Over all a plate Argent double-bordered Sable charged with St. John the Baptist's head Argent bearded and crined Sable semi affronty turned towards the dexter.

The logo of Wrocław was chosen through a competition in 1996.
The author of the winning design is Paweł Pawlak.

The logo is a mark protected by law.
The use of the logo requires the consent of the City Promotion and Foreign Relations Office.

The City's flag is a rectangular piece of cloth coloured red and yellow.
The aspect ratio of the flag is 5 : 8.
The City's coat of arms may be shown on the flag.

The City uses a round engraved metal seal, whose impression shows the City's coat of arms in the centre and the words ‘City of Wrocław’ along the outer rim.
